The stunning Cat44 Sailor of the
Year Trophy for 2005, in fine Waterford Crystal, generously donated by
Ocean Machinery (one of our site sponsors) was
contested throughout the entire year, over the 3 series each comprising 4 months.
The best 5
events from each series counted towards the series results as well
as the overall results.
2005 was a strong year for the Cat 44
Sailor of the year. Series one was contested over 8 events, Series 2
had a record 11 events with 13 sailors, and the final round, was
contested over a mere 4 events, due to strange winter weather
patterns and several conflicting dates.
During the year, attendance increased
dramatically and soon we were seeing in excess of 10 boats on the on
a regular basis - something not seen for many a year.
Racing was very competitive and every
Sunday the racing was always up for grabs. Attendance and
consistence was the name of the game. |

Mark Jones was the class of
the field this year! It seemed that whenever Mark would show up
everyone was racing for 2nd or worse. Mark was on fire throughout
the year and completely dominated the series with bullets almost
every time he raced. Bill Stolberg was a strong contender
throughout the year, swapping race wins with Danny Steyn and
Hunter Fry. Chris Summers started off the year well
and was a serious contender, and then got hooked on kitesurfing
which put paid to his Sailor of the Year dreams.
Dick Russell sailed well
throughout the year, and placed well in many races. Steve
Maffetone was always a threat, but inconsistency held him back.
Bob Shell placed well in several races, as did Doug
Russell. Doug's work kept him from racing most events relegating
him to 9th spot. A much improved Tom Klash in his fast new
boat rounded out the top 10 |
