It took him 8 years to do it, but he
certainly did it with STYLE!
Dick Russell and Jane Hawkins are the 2004 Miami Key
Largo Champions for the Hobie 16 class! Way to go Dick and Hawk - you guys
ROCK!
The wind was around 15 - 25 knots all day out
of the North East and conditions were perfect for a downwind sleigh ride.
Danny clocked a top speed of 23.5 MPH on his hand held GPS. The elapsed time
for the Hobie 16 fleet was a hair over 2hrs and 30 minutes.
Last years winner Mark Jones went out early with a broken side stay. Danny
Steyn and Stacey Tinsley had a great start and were the early leaders in the
Hobie 16 class, but in typical fashion they pitch poled it end over end.
Scott and Tracey, sailing to the right side
of the course, seemed to have the edge as the field started bearing off to
Card Sound bridge, but Dick sailed a great downwind leg and pulled into the
lead. Willie took second, Scott third and after righting his boat Danny
sailed back into 4th.
Hunter and Kim went well early on then
somehow lost the groove allowing Steve / Eric as well as Robin / Sebastian
to get by. Sebastian made his dad Robin look good by keeping them right side
up the whole way and they finished right behind Steve and Eric.
Please note
Cat44 Sailors occupied the first 7 positions
in the Hobie 16 fleet, and Cat44 sailors finished 1st, 2nd and 3rd on
corrected time. Dick and Hawk received the perpetual Mark Albury Trophy for
first beach cat on corrected time. It remains on display at the Miami Yacht
Club. Congratulations to Cat 44 fleet. |
